Launchpad welcomes Lord-Lieutenant of Berkshire

We were delighted to welcome the Lord‑Lieutenant of the Royal County of Berkshire, Andrew Try Esq. to our Work and Life Skills Centre at 135 Cardiff Road, Reading on Wednesday, 11 March.

The Lord‑Lieutenant was hosted by Launchpad Chief Executive Officer Su Hamblyn and Centre Manager Zoe Shawcroft, who gave him a tour of the centre and an insight into the wide range of activities and support on offer.

During his visit, Mr Try met with members of the centre’s weekly art group and guitar groups, and other clients using the centre’s computer facilities to build their digital skills and access online services.

Our Work and Life Skills Centre is a welcoming, community‑based space open both to people using Launchpad’s housing and homelessness prevention services and to members of the wider public.

The centre offers practical work and life skills training, including IT, employability and confidence‑building activities, alongside creative and social sessions designed to reduce loneliness and help people reconnect with their community. The centre’s overall aim is to support people to live more positive, independent lives

Speaking after the visit, Su Hamblyn, CEO of Launchpad, said: “We were absolutely delighted to welcome the Lord‑Lieutenant to the centre and to show him the heart of what happens here every day.

“This centre brings real joy into people’s lives whether that’s through creativity, learning new skills, or simply having a place to belong. For many of the people we support, it plays a vital role in preventing loneliness and social isolation, and in helping them rediscover purpose, confidence and hope.”

The visit reflects the Lord‑Lieutenant’s role as The King’s personal representative in Berkshire, which includes recognising and supporting voluntary and charitable organisations and the vital contribution they make to local communities.

The Work and Life Skills centre is open to adults across Reading, and anyone can refer themselves to the centre directly, as well as being referred by partner organisations and support services.
