Calling all companies who are looking to ditch the desk for a day and enjoy a morning or afternoon of team building all for a good cause!
Now is a great time to book in for a session on our allotment where we grow a variety of fruit and vegetables for Readifood (Reading’s food bank) and for use at our work and life skills centre.
Our allotments are looked after by a small team of volunteers, but we regularly host corporate allotment days to tackle a number of large jobs to really get things growing.
This year there are plans to move a poly tunnel from elsewhere on site to be able to grow more produce inside.
Last year, despite a late start, volunteers at the allotment were able to fill 92 crates of produce.
Teresa, who’s one of the volunteers managing the plot said: “Last year, despite a late start, volunteers at the allotment were able to fill 92 crates of produce.
This is something we are very proud of. We look forward to more corporates coming on site, they will be welcomed with open arms!
“So far this year we have broad beans, onions, garlic and some of the potatoes in. We already have gooseberries, rhubarb and blackberries that produce annually too.
“The committee have started growing cucumbers, tomatoes, courgettes, lettuce and squash and still to plant are runner beans, dwarf beans and climbing beans.
“We also have plans for radish and carrots and grow herbs on the site.
“Tenants also give us their spare plants, and we just put them in. Last year somebody gave us leeks. Our chairman took the ready ones to Readifood a few weeks ago, and that was our first crate of the year!”
