Lizzie’s incredible journey

Reading resident Lizzie Findley has taken on the incredible journey of walking the Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago to raise funds for Launchpad.

She has surpassed her target of £500 – she has raised an incredible £1,120 so far!

The walk is 240km and starts in the historic city of Porto and winds northward through Portugal and across the river at Tui, before hitting Spain’s Galician countryside and ending in Santiago.

Lizzie said: “My trek did not only challenge me physically and mentally, but it served to highlight the need for action and resources in our community. It was truly empowering to see people of all faiths and none on their own journeys take the time to uplift and support others.

“Walking the Camino had been a personal goal of mine for many years and this year I just decided to bite the bullet and go for it. I knew I wanted to challenge myself physically and mentally, but also meet new people and support an amazing charity.

“Every step I took contributed to helping Launchpad provide shelter, guidance and a pathway to stability for those in need.

“I think Launchpad is a charity that does great work in the community and shows great compassion in the way it operates.”

Lizzie started her walk on February 22 from Porto and arrived in Santiago on Friday March 7.

“Despite being the quiet season, I met lots of wonderful people along the way, between stretches of quiet contemplation. They were all walking for their own reasons, but everyone was very supportive and even though going slower or faster, we always uplifted each other.

“I was joined by my mum for the last 100 km from Tui to Santiago and it was lovely to have a friendly face to talk to.

“We met so many lovely people along the way and it was so great to celebrate with them in the square when we arrived, hugging, taking photos and dancing to a local busking group.”

Launchpad fundraising manager Fiona Keyte said: “On behalf of everyone at Launchpad, I want to extend huge thanks to Lizzie for her amazing effort in walking the Camino de Santiago.

“Her dedication, both to the physical challenge and her commitment to supporting our work, is truly inspiring.

“Lizzie’s fundraising journey has exceeded expectations, raising an incredible £1,120 so far; this money will help us continue to provide vital support to those facing homelessness and housing insecurity.

“Lizzie’s determination also serves as a great example of how one person’s challenge can inspire others to take on their own.

“Whether it’s walking, running, or finding another way to give back, we hope her story encourages others to embark on their own fundraising adventures, knowing that every step, no matter how big or small, can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.

“If you’ve got a challenge in mind, get in touch with our friendly fundraising team at fundraising@launchpadreading.org.uk for more information on how we can support you.”
