Our 2024 art exhibition entitled ‘Music’ was, for the first time, curated by the members who attend the art club at Launchpad 135, our work and life skills centre.
They have been exploring the theme of ‘Music’ but without necessarily listening to music.
Under the tutelage of Phil, our artists have been growing in confidence and creativity. Our art club also offers meaningful activity and the chance to make friends and learn new things.
One person who did not want to join the art club because she was not, in her words ‘arty’ has produced some stunning pieces.
According to Sharon Mullis, Life Skills and Volunteer Project Manager at 135, this is because the environment created by Phil and is so relaxed without pressure that people just sit and sketch.
“There is so much creativity here and absolutely no pressure to produce anything, which means everyone is relaxed and happy and the artwork naturally flows!
“It is a calm group and new members are always welcome. This year, at the art show, the members showed visitors around and decided on what should be exhibited and where.
“Being able to do this boosts our members’ confidence and self-esteem. It is also great to enable them to talk to people about their art and what goes on at 135.”
This exhibition this year also had an interactive side as visitors were invited to paint their own rocks, encouraged and supported by volunteer Richard.
Our barista cart was also in operation and one of our members has been taught how to use it and offered delicious coffees to visitors.
Here are some comments from visitors:
“Interesting, absolutely intriguing and musical; all the artwork was amazing. All the artists should be proud of themselves.”
“Beautiful layout of the artwork and I’m so pleased I got to see Launchpad’s amazing work at first hand.”
“Fun, very varied showing the artistry of the painter, very relaxing too.”
“Friendly, welcoming, professional polite, caring, and interesting to talk to and answer questions, amazing group of vols that make the whole experience a good one!”
“I did have a tour guide, and he was very informative, allowed me to view in my own time, then ask questions during and after. Also introduced me to some of the artists that were present, who in turn offered their stories and invited me to take part. A very therapeutic 40 minutes well spend; also a great cup of coffee – thank you all at 135.”
“Delish coffee from my favourite coffee bean seller – well made!”
