Tell us about your volunteering role at Launchpad David

I volunteer twice a month at Launchpad’s Work and Life Skills Centre. I run ‘Digital Skills’ sessions the first and third Monday of the month. These are usually drop-in sessions, unless someone has something specific they need help with and I might be told in advance.

Why did you decide to volunteer?

I retired three years ago and wanted to find something to do with my time that would use my work skills and that I would enjoy. I had worked in IT for more than 30 years.

In my 20s I volunteered for an organisation that supported people who were experiencing homelessness so I had an interest in that sector. I heard about the role at Launchpad through similar ‘Get Online’ sessions that run at Reading Library.

What does your volunteering entail?

Clients have access to a number of laptops here and can come in with absolutely any questions they may have about getting online and getting access to their emails or forms they may have to complete. I help them to feel comfortable and confident using computers and one of the common issues is forgetting passwords and then having to re-set them. I also make sure the communal laptops here work well and I perform general housekeeping duties on them.

Do you do any other volunteering?

I volunteer with the Canal and River Trust as a lock-keeper at Aldermaston amongst other things. The Trust asked if I could lead walks along the canal in Reading for members of the public, which I really enjoyed. When speaking with the staff at Launchpad, they asked if I would lead similar walks for those who attend the Work and Life Skills Centre, which I have been doing.

I also help with the IT for the local MS Society (Multiple Sclerosis) and I coach canoeing.

What would you say to anyone considering volunteering?

Do it! There are so many different roles and opportunities out there. Find something that you are interested in and that will give you a sense of satisfaction. It is an immense feeling being able to give back. My time is now my own and it is wonderful to be able to fill it with doing something enjoyable and worthwhile.
